More Movies To Watch

Back in 2009, I wrote about HelloMovies, a web services that allows you to search for movies to watch on DVD or streaming online.  See that post HERE.  Web services like these come and go, and today there is a new player on the block.  Check out CanIStream.it? 

CanIStream.it? goes a bit further with movies searches allowing users to search across multiple streaming services. In addition, you can set a reminder via email when your movie becomes available.  CanIStream.it? is available for iOS and Android devices as well.

Movie Trailers To Kindle Fire Part 2

Now its time for the more complicated, but fun task.  I am still using Apple's movie trailer website to find all the upcoming movies I want to see.  Now, there are a few more web services to bring it all together.

This may seem tedious up front, but once it's done, the everything will happen automatically when you star items in Google Reader.

Things you will need:

1. Instapaper account.  http://www.instapaper.com/
2. Google Reader account.  http://goo.gl/vpdjz
3. ifttt account.  (If This, Then That) http://ifttt.com/
4. RSS Feed of movie trailers.  I use THIS feed.

Here are the steps: 

1. Log into your Instapaper account. Setup your Kindle to receive Unread items from Instapaper.  YouTube user mlgsca gives a great demo. See instructions on how to do this HERE.  
2. Find the movie trailer site you like.  I use iTunes @ http://trailers.apple.com
3. Log into your Google Reader account.
4. Log into ifftt account and create a trigger to send all starred items from Google Reader to Instapaper.  Or you can grab my recipe HERE. 
5. Add and subscribe to the rss feed you found from your favorite movie website. (Not all movie websites will have rss feeds)
6. Begin to star movies you like.  All of these items will appear in the Unread section on Instapaper.
7. Go to your Kindle Fire and check the carousel or the Docs section for your list of upcoming movies you want to see.
8. Optional Step.  If you would like to have your movie list show up in the books section and not the Docs section, go to your Instapaper account. On the right hand side of the screen, click on Kindle in the Download section.  A .mobi file will be available to you.  Upload this file to Kindle using any of the methods below.

Send .mobi file by uploading to Amazon.com in Manage Kindle page.

Movie Trailers To Kindle Fire Part 1

If you like watching movie trailers like I do, then this how-to maybe for you.  I use Apple's movie trailer website to find all the upcoming movies I may want to watch later on demand at home.  In the past, I would copy and paste each title into a text document, then save the document for later reference.  Now, thanks to some very smart programmers somewhere in the world, this task has become automated.  I have two solutions, one simple, one complicated and maybe unnecessary, but still fun to create.  

My first solution has 2 steps and requires one web service to bring it all together.   There are many ways to do this, this is just one way I found useful for me.  Hopefully you can use it as well.  To make this work you will need an Instapaper account, and of course a Kindle Fire.  

Here are the steps:

1. Log into your Instapaper account.
2. Add the Read It Later button to your favorite web browser website.
3. Find the movie trailer site you like and select the movies you want.   I use iTunes @ http://trailers.apple.com
4. Go back to Instapaper, click on account, then Manage My Kindle Settings.  Follow all the instructions.
5. Your Unread movie list will appear on your Kindle Fire in the carousel and in the Docs section.  

In the next post, I will go into the more complicated way to do this task and explain the manual way to download a .mobi file for Kindle from Instapaper.  And while you are tinkering with Instapaper settings, donate a few bucks to this great service.
