Possible Win For MPAA

The last time I wrote about The Motion Picture Association, they were desperately trying to throw a wrench into the wheels of education by only allowing videotape screen recording of movies. (See Blog Archive MPAA and the Classroom. June 2009) Now, it seems that the MPAA just might be screaming with joy over The NEC Corporation's new video identification system. NEC claims their new system can detect illegal video with an accuracy rate of 96%. Digital signatures are embedded in video that only take up about 80 bytes in size per frame.

The jury is still out on whether NEC can truly deliver on its promise, but I am sure as soon as this new technical innovation is made available, the work by hackers will begin to unravel it. And if you are thinking about bootlegging movies for profit, you might want to checkout the MPAA's nice interactive map on fines per states.
Just in case you need to start saving bail money.

Thank You Kate

There are times when the unexpected comes around the corner to bring pleasant surprises.  Normally I don't think twice about taking chances on random experiences, but I thought it would be this one time only.Kate changed all that.  Who would know that I did it?  Under normal circumstances I would have ignored everything and stayed the course.  The gravity of the situation was pulling me down to begin something that could become a habit.  Kate made things simple and easy, no stings attached.  As I sit in my local Starbucks, Kate helped get the ideas from my brain to paper or epaper if you like saving the environment.  Kate, the default Kubuntu (Linux) text editor on my netbook was a life saver when my wifi connection didn't work and OpenOffice was unavailable.  Some of Kate's features include configurable syntax highlighting for languages ranging from C and C++ to HTML to bash scripts, the ability to create projects, and a self-contained terminal emulator. Kate is everything you'll want in a text editor at home and on the go.
